Slyly Gifted Charges From Last to Victory

Slyly Gifted, last by 10 lengths midway through the race, caught pace-setting Mark Chip in the final strides to win the $40,000 feature by a half length Thursday at Hollywood Park.
Mark Chip was about 8 lengths ahead of Slyly Gifted at the top of the stretch, but could not hold him off at the wire.
Slyly Gifted, 115, trained by Philip Hronec and ridden by Russell Baze, started his rally by coming 4-wide into the stretch. The 5-year-old gelding covered the mile in 1:37 2/5.
Slyly Gifted paid $16, $8.20 and $5.40. The victory was worth $22,000, increasing Slyly Gifted’s career earnings to $429,239.
Favored Mark Chip, with Chris McCarron and 114 pounds, paid $3 and $2.80. Hot And Smoggy, under Alex Solis and 114, was another 2 1/4 lengths back and paid $5.20.
