Loyola Edges Austin Peay, Faces DePaul

ROSEMONT, Ill. — Enoch Simmons sank a jumper with 5 seconds left to lift Loyola Marymount to a 94-93 victory over Austin Peay in the opening round of the Old Style tournament at the Rosemont Horizon Thursday night.

In an earlier game, Terence Greene scored 16 points to lead DePaul to a 73-52 victory over North Carolina A&T.;

Loyola (2-3) will play DePaul today in the tournament final, and Austin Peay will face North Carolina A&T; in the consolation game.

Austin Peay (6-4) forced the high-scoring Lions into numerous turnovers and missed shots in taking a 56-50 lead at halftime. The Governors stretched their lead to 14 points early in the second half.

But Loyola, which won the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. team scoring title last season and had a record-tying 164 points in its 1988-89 opener, drew to 93-92 on Bo Kimble’s jumper with less than a minute to go, setting up Simmons’ game-winner.

The Lions were led by Hank Gathers’ 29 points, Simmons’ 24 and Jeff Fryer’s 22.

The Governors were led by Keith Rawls and LaMonte Ware, each with 21 points.

In the DePaul game, Greene, who scored only 2 points on free throws in the first half, dominated the second half. On his first basket, he became the 29th DePaul player to score 1,000 points in his college career. Brad Niemann added 14 points for DePaul.
