Susan Jaffe, a ballerina with the New York-based American Ballet Theatre, injured her knee Tuesday night during her official Soviet debut with the Kirov Ballet in Leningrad. The New York Times reported Wednesday that Jaffe, appearing in the Soviet Union under the auspices of an exchange agreement that will bring Kirov dancers to the United States (Orange County Performing Arts Center, Aug. 18-27), completed only the first act of “Don Quixote” before being forced to withdraw. Jaffe was replaced in the last three acts by Kirov soloist Yelena Pankova. Monroe Warshaw, an American photographer present at the Kirov performance, said Jaffe was very well received by the Kirov audience, but it was obvious that after her injury Jaffe could not continue. The newspaper also reported that Jaffe would attempt to perform tonight as scheduled.
