CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Reds announced today they have signed free-agent players Joel Youngblood and Manny Trillo to a one-year $320,000 contract each for the 1989 season.
Youngblood, 37, a right-handed hitting outfielder and pinch hitter, played for San Francisco last season and figures to be a pinch hitter and reserve outfielder for the Reds. Trillo, 37, a right-handed hitter who played all four infield positions last season for the Chicago Cubs, probably will be used in a similar role with Cincinnati.
The Reds also announced that first baseman-outfielder Ken Griffey and right-handed relief pitcher Frank Williams became free agents when they were not tendered contracts by Tuesday’s deadline.
