Local News in Brief : Bad-Weather Kits Given to Homeless

Los Angeles police officers began distributing kits Tuesday to help homeless people protect themselves against the weather, officials said.
The kits consist of a knit stocking cap, a large sheet of plastic ground covering, a thermal blanket and an optional packet of vitamins, said Maxene Johnston, president of the Weingart Center, where volunteers assembled the packages.
The Los Angeles Police Commission voted unanimously to buy 1,000 of the kits at $2.50 each, just five days after Commissioner Reva Tooley saw a physician at the Weingart Center give one to a man determined to spend the night on the street in inclement weather.
Without the kit, the physician told Tooley, the man could suffer hypothermia and die.
