Local News in Brief : AIDS Cases Decline Slightly in County

New AIDS cases reported in Los Angeles County in November totaled 124, a slight drop from the previous month, when there were 153 new cases, health department officials announced Tuesday.
The new figures bring the total number of cases in the county to 6,201. The mortality rate remained at 62%, accounting for 3,714 deaths through the end of November. In addition, there are 65 cases awaiting investigation.
For the third month in a row, 4% of all AIDS victims in the county were intravenous drug users who acquired the disease through the sharing of hypodermic needles.
Homosexual and bisexual males remain the largest at-risk group, with 89% of all AIDS cases falling into that category.
