Matti Nykanen of Finland soared to a final jump of 90 meters in near-perfect form to win the 70-meter World Cup ski jump for his first victory of the season at Sapporo, Japan.
Nykanen, a triple gold medalist in the Calgary Winiter Olympics, beat West Germany’s 19-year-old Dieter Thoma, who had the day’s longest jump of 94.5 meters.
