Boat Operator Charged in Death

LONG BEACH — A Newport Beach boat owner who was operating a pleasure craft when it hit rocks off Santa Catalina Island, killing a man earlier this month, was charged with manslaughter Wednesday, officials said.
Fred Gausewitz, 28, was scheduled to surrender Monday at Long Beach Municipal Court for arraignment, Sheriff’s Deputy Hal Grant said.
The one count of manslaughter against Gausewitz was filed Wednesday by the Los Angeles County district attorney’s Long Beach office, Grant said.
Gausewitz was operating his pleasure boat for a 1-day fishing trip with four friends on Dec. 3, when the boat hit rocks in Lover’s Cove at Catalina, officials said.
William Glose, 33, of Newport Beach was thrown from the boat and killed. Deputies said at the time that there was evidence of excessive drinking aboard the boat.
