An 80-year-old Van Nuys man died Wednesday after being thrown from his bicycle when it skidded on a patch of dried cooking grease, police said.
Steve Schubert was riding his bicycle in an alley behind a restaurant in the 13300 block of Victory Boulevard about 1:45 p.m. when he hit grease that had been spilled the day before, said Officer Charlton Jackson of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Valley Traffic Division. Schubert’s bicycle slipped from under him and he hit his head on the pavement, Jackson said.
Schubert died at the scene. Efforts to revive him at North Hollywood Medical Center were unsuccessful.
Jackson said the grease spill was from a 55-gallon drum that a restaurant employee had knocked over Tuesday. Witnesses told police that two other people had slipped in the grease.
Owners of the restaurant, Mariscos Vallarta, were not cited. Street maintenance crews covered the spill with sand.
