The government has recovered $731,000 from Varian Associates Inc. of Palo Alto to settle claims from alleged company mischarges on Air Force contracts, the Justice Department said. In 1986, the company had voluntarily returned to the government nearly $1.7 million of the money allegedly overcharged. Assistant Atty. Gen. John Bolton said the out-of-court settlement covered alleged mischarges by the company’s microwave tube division. Varian voluntarily disclosed the mischarges to the Pentagon’s inspector general’s office in 1986, he said.
