Bill Redell’s second resignation as football coach at Crespi High will be his last. Redell, who served 2 stints that covered 5 seasons as the Celts’ coach, announced his resignation Thursday, citing financial considerations.
Redell, who also works as an insurance salesman, earned $4,500 at Crespi this season. He said he is pursuing other coaching jobs at the high school and college level but is looking for a full-salaried position.
Redell also acknowledged that his decision was affected by the end of his son’s high school career. Senior quarterback Ron Redell is the third of Redell’s sons to play for him at Crespi.
Redell, 47, compiled a 43-16-1 record and led Crespi to the school’s only Southern Section football championship. He guided Crespi to an 8-3 record in 1982 before serving as an assistant for 2 years in the defunct U. S. Football League. He returned to Crespi in 1985 and led the Celts to the Big Five Conference title a year later.
Redell restored credibility to the school’s football program and will be sorely missed, Athletic Director Paul Muff said.
Muff will seek a replacement from among current staff members, seeking an on-campus coach. Meeting those criteria are offensive coordinator Jim Benkert, defensive coordinator Tim Lins and offensive line coach Joel Wilker. Muff expects to name a replacement by the middle of the month.
