Nicaragua’s Sandinista government has freed the last 10 opposition leaders in jail since an anti-government rally was forcefully broken up five months ago by riot police. Two other leaders of the July 10 demonstration in Nadaime, 27 miles south of Managua, were released last month because of poor health. The day after the protest, the government expelled U.S. Ambassador Richard Melton and seven other American diplomats in Managua, asserting that Melton was using the embassy to direct a “conspiracy” against the government.
