POP LP CHART : Toppers Hang On; ‘Wilburys’ to Rise?

The death of Roy Orbison, who’s featured on the “Traveling Wilburys” album, could make that album a collector’s item. It stayed at No. 8 on the Billboard magazine chart this week, but look for it to go higher. One of the surprise hits of the fall is Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young’s “American Dream” (No. 18). Tiffany’s new album, “Hold an Old Friend’s Hand,” jumped to No. 27. ‘Tis the season for greatest hits packages. Three of the fastest-rising are Kiss’ “Smashes, Thrashes and Hits” (No. 25); “Journey’s Greatest Hits” (No. 28), and Fleetwood Mac’s “Greatest Hits” (No. 49).

* Roger Who? Pink Floyd proved that it could sell albums and pack arenas without former leader-bassist Roger Waters. Fans liked the new show so much that this live two-record set, recorded last summer, is a hot item, jumping to No. 16 in just two weeks.
