Cook Plays Transition Game Well

Wayne Cook has wasted no time in trading in his pads and helmet for sneakers and shorts. The first team All-Marmonte League quarterback from Newbury Park High averaged 22.7 points in 3 games during the Nordhoff tournament and was named MVP.

In the championship game against Righetti, Cook scored 23 points and grabbed 8 rebounds despite getting into foul trouble and playing only 4 minutes of the second half. He averaged 8.3 rebounds in the tournament. Teammates Anthony Rutter and Brian Smith were named to the all-tournament team.

Add basketball: Montclair Prep shot 52% from the field during the loss to North Hollywood but committed 24 turnovers. Guard Craig Handschu had 15 points, 10 below his average last season. Handschu is the state’s top scorer among returning guards, according to California Basketball magazine.

Kurt Schwan of Westlake averaged 24.7 points over 3 games during the St. Monica tournament, in which the Warriors placed second. Schwan also dominated the boards, pulling down 12.7 rebounds a game or 45% of Westlake’s total. As a team, Westlake is shooting 76% from the line and 45% from the field. Schwan, who signed recently with Weber State, is shooting 66% from the field.

Football: In Canyon’s 45-14 victory over Buena on Friday, the Cowboys intercepted 5 passes and returned them for 100 yards. Jason Stanley led the Cowboys with 3 for 63 yards. Brian Schroeder, who had an interception nullified by a penalty, picked off 1 pass and returned it 23 yards. Sophomore linebacker Robert Lawrence recorded his first career interception, returning it 14 yards.

Cross-country: Bryan Dameworth (second) and Deena Drossin of Agoura (fifth in the girls’ race) and Mike Williamson of Thousand Oaks (eighth) placed among the top 8 runners at the Kinney West regional Saturday in Fresno. It marked the fourth consecutive year that at least 1 boy and 1 girl from the Valley area have qualified for the national championships. This year’s event will is be held Saturday in San Diego.
