St. Mary’s Fast Start Is Too Much for USIU

Demetrius Laffitte scored 15 points and had a game-high 11 rebounds Tuesday night, but U.S. International University lost to unbeaten St. Mary’s, 98-67.

St. Mary’s (4-0) took a 21-2 lead and led, 55-26, at halftime. Paul Wilson added 14 points for USIU (3-4). Erick Newman scored 20 points for St. Mary’s.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Shannon Anderson scored 21 points, Camille Armijo had 15 and Shawndel Reddic added 10 as host Point Loma Nazarene defeated Whittier College, 88-53, in a nonconference game. Point Loma Nazarene improved to 5-1. Patricia Palmer led Whittier (1-5) with 16 points and 15 rebounds.

BOXING

Gilbert Baptist of San Diego and Oscar Pena of San Antonio, Tex., headline a 6-bout card at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the El Cortez Convention Center in San Diego. Baptist (14-8) and Pena (15-4) will fight 10 rounds in the 154-pound division. Also at 154 pounds, in a 6-round bout, L.J. “Tiger” Canty of San Diego will face Eduardo Marquez. Carlos M. Nickolas (8-1) of San Diego will face Hugo Orozco (6-1) in a 6-round fight at 130 pounds.

MEN’S SOCCER

University of San Diego midfielder Trong Nguyen has been named to the All-West Coast Athletic Conference first team. Nguyen, a 5-foot 7-inch sophomore, led USD to a 10-8-2 overall record this season.

USD sophomore forwards Jason Pearson and Bob Welch were named to the second team.
