Boys’ Basketball Roundup : Compton Stuns Top-Ranked Capistrano Valley, 54-51
Compton High School took advantage of a shooting slump by Capistrano Valley to upset the Cougars, 54-51, in the first round of the Fountain Valley boys’ basketball tournament.
Capistrano Valley, the preseason No. 1 ranked team in Orange County by The Times, opened a 11-0 lead but Compton rallied and trailed only, 16-13, at the end of the first quarter. Capistrano Valley then went 1 of 29 from the field from the middle of the second quarter to late in the third quarter.
Compton led, 28-24, at the half and, 35-30, going into the fourth quarter.
In another Fountain Valley first-round tournament game:
Edison 64, El Dorado 61--Guard Dan Lovelady scored 21 points to lead Edison. Forward Steve Thobe added 12 for Edison (1-1), which plays Compton tonight at 6. El Dorado plays Capistrano Valley at 4:30.
In the Laguna Beach tournament:
Dana Hills 48, Laguna Hills 47--John Lloyd made 2 free throws with 1 second left to give Dana Hills the victory. Laguna Hills (1-1) had the ball with 2 seconds left and inbounded the ball but Lloyd drew a charging foul. Lloyd scored a game-high 19 points and Mike Fedden added 15 for Dana Hills (3-0), which plays Brea at 7:30 p.m. in a semifinal.
Brea-Olinda 80, Lynwood 69--Keith Walker scored a game-high 29 points to lead Brea-Olinda (2-0) in the second-round game. Matt Chamberlain and Brian Hudson added 12 each for Brea.
Corona del Mar 58, Whittier Christian 42--Center Brian Spratt scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and forward Chris Pliha scored 10 points off the bench to pace Corona del Mar (1-1).
In the Valencia tournament:
Rancho Alamitos 65, Troy 52--Gary Lira scored 15 points and Garth Kohne 13 to lead Rancho Alamitos in the second round. David Green added 12 for Rancho Alamitos, which plays La Habra tonight at Valencia at 6:30 in a championship semifinal. Richard Wesley scored 16 and Mike Abot 10 for Troy.
El Modena 79, Katella 68--Robbie Pietsch and John Darrow scored 24 points each for El Modena in the opening-round game. El Modena (3-0) plays Canyon in a semifinal Thursday at 8 p.m. at Valencia.
Robert Sindt scored 15 for Katella (0-2).
La Habra 65, Westminster 59--Anthony Ortiz scored 22 points to lead La Habra in a quarterfinal at Esperanza High School. Tim Deitel scored 26 and Dawn Shaw added 17 for Westminster.
In the Garden Grove tournament:
Estancia 55, Pacifica 37--Estancia turned a close game into a lopsided victory by outscoring the Mariners, 18-5, in the final quarter. Forwards Mike Curtis and Paul McDaniel scored 11 points each to pace the winners. Dustin Bonham had 11 and Jason Brodowski added 9 for Pacifica.
Loara 66, Garden Grove 38--Forward Mike Cooney and guard Tes Whitlock led all scorers with 16 points each in a victory for Loara (2-0).
In the Santa Ana tournament:
Santa Ana 60, Los Amigos 37--Chauney Woolridge scored 16 points, Mike Zamora 11 and his brother Rich 9 for Santa Ana in the first-round game. Carlos Palomino scored 25 for Los Amigos.
Orange 58, Buena Park 37--Robby Sallinger scored 14 and Mike Gibbons 11 for Orange in the first-round game. Orange opened an 8-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and led, 25-9, at the half. Shane Langernberg was the only Buena Park player in double figures with 12.
