Girls’ Basketball Roundup : University Wins Third-Place Game Against Edison
Denise Gandara scored 15 points to lead University High School to a 51-42 victory over Edison in the third-place game of the Irvine girls’ basketball tournament Tuesday. Edison led early but University (3-1) took a 23-21 lead late in the third quarter and never trailed.
Shelly Davis and Sandy Johnson added 10 each for University. Davis also had a team-high 8 rebounds.
Kristin Tanabe scored 17 for Edison (2-2).
In the Irvine tournament consolation championship:
La Quinta 51, San Clemente 40--Amy Jalewalia scored 16 points, had 10 rebounds and 10 steals to lead La Quinta (3-1). Heather Brannan scored 12 points and Tanya Krill added 10 for La Quinta.
In the Irvine tournament fifth-place game:
Capistrano Valley 45, Loara 38--Shelly Zierhut scored 18 points and Holly Anderson 15 for Capistrano Valley. Heidi Sorour scored 13 for Loara.
In nonleague games:
Canyon 51, Magnolia 29--Sherri Rhyne scored 15 points and had 8 rebounds to lead visiting Canyon. Christa Ramirez had 9 points and 9 assists for Canyon.
Marina 59, Long Beach Wilson 29--Melisa Sortino scored 21 points and Lisa Orosco 12 for Marina (2-0) at Wilson.
Allison Krause added 12 assists for Marina, which broke the game open in the second half after leading, 26-17, at halftime.
Fountain Valley 51, Long Beach Poly 40--Stacey Hisaka scored a game-high 21 points, 15 from the free-throw line, to lead the visiting Barons (1-1). Yvette Ybarra added 12 for Fountain Valley.
LaToya Gray had 12 and Adrian Hughes 11 for Poly (0-3).
Orange Lutheran 59, Liberty Christian 48--Pam Marty had 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead host Orange Lutheran (2-0). Renee Wright added 13 and DeeDee Oyama 10 for Orange Lutheran.
Sharon Crouch led Liberty Christian with a game-high 24 points.
