Local News in Brief : ‘Scary’ Reminder of Drunk Driving Risks

Palisades High School, which has been struggling to cope with the deaths of 10 students and young area residents over 16 months, has placed the twisted wreckage of an automobile on the campus as a reminder of the consequences of drinking and driving.

The white 1982 Camaro Berlinetta is not the car in which three seniors and an out-of-town friend lost their lives in a fiery crash in October. But school officials said they hope it will bring home the need to drive safely over the holiday recess.

“It’s scared a lot of people off,” said Max Graham, a 17-year-old student.

The principal of the Pacific Palisades school, Gerald Dodd, said student assemblies were held Monday at which several speakers talked about the need to refrain from drinking and driving. A similar message was conveyed to more than 350 community residents at a meeting later that evening.

In the wake of the recent accident, Dodd said, students have also applied to start a chapter of Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD).
