Local News in Brief : Trailer Site OKd for Homeless Vets
Fourteen mobile homes for homeless veterans and their families will be placed on federally owned land in West Los Angeles under an agreement reached with the U.S. General Services Administration, Mayor Tom Bradley announced.
The two- and three-bedroom trailers, which officials expect to be in place before the end of the month, will offer transitional shelter for families looking for permanent housing. The city of Los Angeles will provide electrical, sewage and water hookups and is negotiating with the Salvation Army to provide social services.
The trailers will be placed on a 2.13-acre parcel near the intersection of Wilshire and Sepulveda boulevards, the former site of an airport shuttle bus operation. A portion of the property will be used for a playground, garden and parking lot, Bradley said in a press release.
City officials said they expect the trailers to remain at the federal site for about one year. The property, put up for sale in March, 1986, is tied up in a legal battle. The GSA has agreed to make the land available during the litigation.
