Local News in Brief : 2 Held as Police Chase Truck Then Motorcycle
Two Box Canyon brothers were arrested after leading Los Angeles police on a lengthy chase through the West San Fernando Valley that ended when the suspects’ motorcycle crashed into a patrol car, authorities said Tuesday.
Alex Vaughn, 22, and Steve Vaughn, 30, were arrested on suspicion of felony evading police after the Monday night chase from Canoga Park to the mountainous area west of Chatsworth, police said.
The chase began at 6:40 p.m. at Topanga Canyon Boulevard and Saticoy Street when two patrol officers attempted to pull over a pickup truck on a routine traffic stop. Police said the pickup truck sped off and headed northwest through Chatsworth.
Police said the truck, which had been reported stolen in Simi Valley, headed into Box Canyon and along several winding dirt roads before its driver, identified as Alex Vaughn, abandoned it and jumped on a waiting motorcycle driven by his brother.
The pair were attempting to escape on the motorcycle when they sped around a curve on a dirt road and struck a patrol car head-on, police said. The officers in the car were not injured, but each of the brothers suffered a broken leg.
Police said both brothers were in the jail ward of Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center. Steve Vaughn was being held in lieu of $2,500 bail, and Alex Vaughn was being held without bail because he is wanted on an escape charge from Madera County Jail.
