OSHA has proposed fines totaling $71,620 against Eastern Airlines for alleged “willful violations” involving exposure of its workers to cadmium dust at Miami International Airport’s landing gear shop. Eastern had no immediate comment. Cadmium is a known health hazard and possible carcinogen. Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration inspectors found that about 20 employees who grind landing gear components were exposed to cadmium dust levels up to 60 times the permissible level. In 1987, an Eastern environmental health expert recommended controls to limit exposure, but the company did not follow the recommendation, OSHA said.
