MCI Communications said it will cut long-distance rates 3.9% Jan. 1, echoing a similar cut announced last week by competitor U S Sprint that will also take effect New Year’s Day. The moves will maintain parity for both companies’ rates with respect to American Telephone & Telegraph, after federal regulators required AT&T; to cut its rates Dec. 1 by 3.8%. The cuts reflect lower connection charges paid to local phone companies for completing long-distance calls.
