Skeletal remains believed to be those of Marine Lance Cpl. Jason Rother, 19, missing since a night training exercise last Aug. 31, were found near the Mojave Desert community of Bagdad, about 17 miles from where he was posted as a road guard on old U.S. 66. Because of a mix-up, the Minneapolis Marine was not reported missing for nearly two days and was left in sizzling desert heat with three canteens of water. Two sergeants and a lieutenant face courts-martial over the incident and a platoon leader and company commander have lost their commands. Found near the remains were an M-16 rifle, a grenade launcher and a wallet containing Rother’s identification.
