The United Farm Workers’ boycott of California table grapes, which has been supported by several major religious organizations, has won increased backing from food stores and restaurants in New York. The Associated and Pioneer supermarket chains have joined Red Apple and Coop markets in agreeing not to advertise table grapes during the December holiday season, and several Manhattan restaurants have agreed to take grapes off their menus until the industry addresses the threat of toxic pesticide abuse. The union is working to achieve a ban on the use of five poison chemicals in the grape industry and a joint union-grower pesticide residue testing program for grapes in supermarkets.
