Local News in Brief : Testimony Ends in Minkow Trial

After 50 days of testimony in a Los Angeles federal courtroom, the questioning of witnesses concluded Friday in the trial of Barry Minkow, the one-time millionaire whiz kid who is accused in a 57-count indictment of staging an elaborate securities hoax through his ZZZZ Best carpet cleaning company.
Closing arguments by the prosecutor and Minkow’s defense attorney are scheduled Tuesday. The jury was expected to receive its instructions from U.S. District Judge Dickran Tevrizian by Wednesday evening.
The Minkow case generated more than 25,000 exhibits and more than 100,000 pages of evidence, according to the U.S. attorney’s office.
Also on trial with Minkow, 22, is accountant Norman Rothberg, 52, of Marina del Rey, who allegedly was offered a bribe by Minkow to recant his allegations to ZZZZ Best’s outside accountants that the company engaged in a fraud.
The other 10 defendants in the case pleaded guilty.
