USD Advances 5 Tennis Players to Quarterfinals

Top-seeded Jose Luis Noriega of the University of San Diego defeated Bill Kearsley of San Diego State, 6-3, 6-0, Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the San Diego All-College tournament at USD.
Second-seeded David Stewart of USD also advanced with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Hans Hoegstedt of Point Loma Nazarene.
USD’s Dan Mattera, J.R. Edwards and Mark Farren also won, giving the Toreros 5 of the final 8 players still in the tournament.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Barbara Mueller of Rancho Mirage, Charleen Hillebrand of San Pedro, Judy Louie of Corona del Mar and Dee Williams-Horne of Pasadena all won third-round matches in the National Hardcourt Women’s 40 Senior Tennis Tournament at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club, giving Southern Californians half of the quarterfinal field.
Mueller defeated Alice Middleton of Santa Monica, 6-4, 6-3; Hillebrand defeated Margaret Robins of Mill Valley, 6-1, 5-7, 6-1; Louie defeated Bunny Smith of Miami, 6-2, 6-0, and Williams-Horne defeated Analee Hanson of Excelsior, Minn., 6-1, 6-0.
Georgia Turner of El Cajon was the only Southern Californian to lose, ousted by Sally Huss of Bonsall, 6-2, 6-2.
Quarterfinals in both singles and doubles are scheduled for today.
