A Tustin man was arrested Thursday on suspicion of abducting and slaying a young woman from Carson in 1981, becoming a co-defendant on charges his son already faces in Los Angeles Superior Court, officials said.
Robert Beckett, 49, was arrested by homicide detectives about 10 a.m. at his home in Tustin by officers from Tustin police and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Beckett’s son, Robert Beckett Jr., 27, of Aspen, Colo., was arrested last December.
The two men are suspected of murdering Tracy Stewart, 18, who was last seen alive Aug. 9, 1981, when she left her home for a social engagement, Sheriff’s Deputy Eric Smith said.
The Tustin arrest came after extensive investigation, Smith said, but homicide detectives declined to provide further details. Information also was not released on the circumstances surrounding the murder.
The father was booked at the Norwalk Sheriff’s Station and held without bail pending arraignment in Municipal Court today.
