Cal Lutheran Likely to Leave WFC at Meeting This Week

The Western Football Conference will hold its annual meeting for school presidents, athletic directors and football coaches beginning today at Cal Lutheran, and by the time discussions conclude Friday, the conference probably will be short a team.
Cal Lutheran is expected to withdraw from the 7-team WFC and play an independent schedule until it joins the Division III Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in either 1991 or ’92.
Vic Buccola, the conference’s commissioner, has received notice from Cal Lutheran stating that the university plans to make a proposal during the meeting.
Cal Lutheran was 2-8 last season, 0-6 in the WFC. On Oct. 29, 2 weeks before the end of the season, the Cal Lutheran Board of Regents voted to join the SCIAC, a non-athletic scholarship conference.
Football Coach Bob Shoup is one of the staunchest opponents of CLU remaining a part of the WFC. He insists that it could be injurious for CLU to compete in a conference against scholarship players.
WFC rules require a school notify the conference that it is terminating membership 1 year before taking the action or immediately after the football season ends.
