Four Greenpeace volunteers were arrested in Sacramento during a sit-in at Gov. George Deukmejian’s office as part of a demonstration against the building of a hazardous waste incinerator in Vernon. Thirty members of the environmental group protested the decision of the state Department of Health Services to issue a permit for construction of an incinerator in the industrial city near Los Angeles. The incinerator is the first of several planned in California to help meet the problem of diminishing land for burial of waste. Deukmejian vetoed a bill that would have required the state to prepare a full environmental impact report.
