Rio Mesa 42, Hueneme 14--Senior quarterback John Gomez ran for 2 touchdowns and passed for another in the Channel League finale for both teams at Hueneme.
Rio Mesa (4-6, 3-4) scored 42 unanswered points after Hueneme (4-6, 2-5) had jumped to a 2-touchdown lead.
With Hueneme leading, 14-0, in the second quarter on touchdown runs of 5 and 7 yards by senior Freddie Bradley, Spartan defensive back Kevin Smith intercepted a pass at the Hueneme 36-yard line. On the next play Gomez threw a 36-yard scoring pass to Smith, who also plays wide receiver.
After Scott O’Neil’s 3-yard touchdown run tied the score, 14-14, at halftime, running back Charlie Arceo scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 25-yard run in the third quarter, igniting a 28-0 second half outburst. Arceo rushed for 79 yards in 9 carries.
Gomez had 84 yards rushing in 11 carries and completed 2 of 9 for 69 yards as the Spartans won their third consecutive league game.
Hueneme wide receiver Carlos Cardenas set a school record for receptions in a game with 11 for 122 yards. Bradley gained 137 yards in 21 carries to give him 1,061 yards for the season.
