McKellar Development of La Jolla was selected Friday as partner with San Diego State University Foundation to redevelop 64.5 acres of university land for student housing and parking, with some commercial uses.

The private firm received unanimous approval from the foundation board of directors. The recommendation now goes to SDSU President Thomas Day.

The foundation board plans to enter into exclusive negotiations with McKellar to work out a partnership agreement for the completion of the mixed-use development, according to Harry Albers, foundation general manager.

“We see this as a fantastic opportunity to mitigate traffic, housing and parking problems created by the university’s rapid growth,” Albers said. “Concurrently, we envision a plan that will dramatically change the character of the college area, making it a project we can all feel proud to have created.”

The redevelopment, expected to take place over 15 to 20 years, covers three areas:

* A 36-acre tract bounded by the university’s main entrance on the north, Montezuma Road to the south, College Avenue to the east and 55th Street to the west.

* A 10-acre tract at the north end of 55th Street and bordering the intersection of 55th Street and Remington Road.
