The Board of Supervisors and the Orange County chapter of AMVETS, a war veterans group, presented an award Tuesday to The Times Orange County Edition for coverage of a 1987 Memorial Day ceremony.
The ceremony at the Orange County Hall of Administration included a re-enactment of the famous World War II flag-raising on Iwo Jima that was performed by a group of Marines from Camp Pendleton.
The local AMVETS chapter received a national award for the patriotism demonstrated in its ceremony. Harold Camp, local AMVETS chairman, said the newspaper’s coverage of the event helped to generate subsequent recognition for the ceremony.
