The four members of U2 received the gold medal of the city of Madrid from Mayor Juan Barranco in a ceremony before the premiere of their concert movie “Rattle and Hum.†Barranco on Saturday praised the group’s musical ability and artistic sensibilities and described the medal as a “symbol of the gratitude and friendship of the people of Madrid, who are always appreciative of altruistic causes.†The group arranged for proceeds from the premiere of the movie at the Gran Via Theater to go to Amnesty International, the London-based human rights group. Why Madrid for a premiere? Replied singer Bono Hewson: “Madrid is a very open city, musically interesting, and we all feel very good when we are in Madrid.â€
