TRAVELING in style

Laughter and fun are the greatest tonics known to man, and for nearly 50 years Bob Hope has been delivering his own special elixir to servicemen stationed far from home. In this issue of Traveling in Style, Hope recounts a few of the close calls he has experienced and shares humorous recollections of his countless miles of traveling. Incidentally, the quips in the drawing by Alphonse Normandia that accompanies his story are all authentic Hope-isms.
Master storyteller Sidney Sheldon’s credits include 30 movies, seven Broadway shows and more than 100 million books in print in 30 countries. His eighth book, “Sands of Time,” is about three women in the Basque country of Spain--which is where he takes us, sharing his adventures researching this latest novel. Actress and mother, Ali MacGraw writes of her impressions of Venice with remarkable sensitivity. Her reminiscences take on an almost mystical dreaminess as she paints her word portraits about the city she loves above all others.
Author Thurston Clarke takes us with him on an unusual trek--following the Equator and exploring such out-of-the-way destinations as Mbandaka, Bukittingi, Booue, Cayenne and the banks of the Ogooue River--any one of which serves well for place-dropping at your next cocktail party. Times Travel Editor Jerry Hulse shares some of the highlights in his many years of travel that has taken him 2 1/2 million miles or the equivalent of 100 times around the world.
Also in this issue, radio personality Michael Jackson takes us to his favorite hotel in Switzerland, Ed Rabey and Beverly Beyer guide us on a chic shopping exploration of London, and we go back in time to Moorea with Jay Carlisle to enjoy one of the legendary landmark saloons in the South Pacific.
