On the most southern point of Attica, 65 kilometers southeast of Athens, Greece, is Cape Sounion. On a rocky ledge 60 meters above the sea poses the Temple of Poseidon, built in the days of Pericles. Only 15 of the surrounding sun-bleached columns remain standing against the brilliant Mediterranean sky, challenging the talents of enthusiastic photographers. Scholars believe this 5th-Century B.C. temple was built over the remains of an earlier Poseidon and Athena Temple as part of Pericles’ master plan. One of the columns is said to be engraved with Lord Byron’s initials. The majestic white columns, nearly 2,500 years old, are a memorable sight when captured in the dramatic light of sunset, as in this impressive view by Weinberg/Clark of Image Bank West.
