Mistakes Hurt CSDH in 1-1 Soccer Tie vs. Pomona

Two mistakes within a matter of seconds cost the Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s soccer team in a 1-1 tie Saturday in a California Collegiate Athletic Assn. game against host Cal Poly Pomona.
Trailing 1-0 only five minutes into the game, Pomona got a break in front of the Toro goal when Mark Merino of Dominguez Hills fouled Brian Wendel. Wendel chipped a direct kick over the Toro defensive wall, and as the ball came down, a Dominguez Hills defender cut off goalie Chris Wilson with an unsuccessful header attempt. In the confusion, Johnny Lima of Pomona put the loose ball into the net.
From that point on, Dominguez Hills led in shots on goal, 6-3, but could not score. Mark Lincir had staked the Toros to a one-goal lead 3:47 into the game with a 25-yard chip shot.
The tie may put a crimp in the Toros’ CCAA title hopes, although it technically moved Dominguez Hills into a first-place tie with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Both are 4-1-1. San Luis Obispo and Cal State Northridge (4-1) meet this afternoon.
Dominguez Hills hosts Cal State Northridge in another CCAA showdown Wednesday.
The CSDH women beat Cal Poly Pomona 3-1. Rhonda McVicar, Donna Robertson and Jeanine Charroux scored goals for the lady Toros, now 7-7-2.
