Seven people died as violence flared in South Africa over the weekend. In the black townships outside Pietermaritzburg, the capital of Natal province, four black men died in factional fighting, but police gave no other details. Another black man was shot and killed in the Johannesburg black township of Soweto by attackers armed with a Soviet-made AK-47 automatic rifle, police said. Also, in the black township of Mpumalanga, two men burned to death and 11 men and a woman were injured when a firebomb was hurled into a home. An unidentified man was found stabbed to death in the same township in an attack linked by police to the long-running feud between supporters of the radical United Democratic Front and members of the more moderate Inkatha movement.
