Twelve Chicago police officers were indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of accepting thousands of dollars in bribes to protect gambling and drug operations on the South Side. Also indicted were 21 reputed gamblers and drug dealers who allegedly paid the bribes, ranging from $700 to $8,300. The officers included two sergeants and 10 patrol officers. The indicted officers, ranging in seniority from six years’ experience to a 33-year veteran, face charges of racketeering and racketeering conspiracy.
