Philippine President Corazon Aquino said the threat of another attempt to topple her government has diminished during the last month with the arrests of scores of right-wing extremists. Among the 73 rightists captured in a monthlong drive by the military capital command were Lt. Cols. Eduardo Matillano and Francisco Baula, both top aides of Gregorio (Gringo) Honasan, leader of a 1987 coup attempt that took at least 53 lives and nearly toppled the government. Honasan remains at large, but Aquino said he will be captured “in due time.”
