McDonnell Will Lay Off 700; Some in Orange County

ST. LOUIS — McDonnell Douglas announced Monday that it will lay off 700 employees, including 60 in Orange County, from its information services group, McDonnell Information Systems.
About 250 layoffs will be in St. Louis, where the jobs will be phased out over the next several weeks, a spokesman said. The remainder will be spread among the information systems offices around the country, including 60 in Irvine and Cypress, and in London.
McDonnell Douglas Information Systems, which lost $50 million in the first half of 1988, will be reorganized from seven divisions into three divisions, the company said. The layoffs were attributed to that reorganization.
About half of the group’s 11,000 employees work in St. Louis.
The company sells data processing services to industries, health-care providers, the federal government and manufacturers. The information systems group laid off several hundred workers last October in an attempt to improve its financial standing.
