Glendale Lacks Nothing but Mercy in 49-0 Rout of Pierce
Pierce College Coach Bob Enger had one simple request of the Glendale College football team going into Saturday’s Western State Conference game at Pierce.
Have mercy.
Enger hoped that the Vaqueros (3-0, 2-0) would at least show more mercy than they did in a stomping of West Los Angeles last week.
But from the outset of Saturday night’s game, it was clear that the Brahmas (0-3, 0-2) would not be getting any breaks.
Pierce gave Glendale all the breaks it needed and was bludgeoned, 49-0.
In fact, if the Vaqueros were considerate, they would not have left the locker room for the third quarter. They had a 35-0 lead at halftime. If lacking consideration, at least Glendale claimed to respect the Brahmas.
“I have great respect for Ronnie Lopez,†Glendale Coach Jim Sartoris said of the Pierce quarterback who was the City Section 3-A Player of the Year last season at Franklin High.
Lopez completed 7 of 14 passes for 62 yards and threw 1 interception.
“Our defense was totally dominant,†Sartoris said.
Glendale fullback Sean Hampton flashed through the Pierce defense so effortlessly that it appeared as if the Brahmas had fielded an 8-man team. Hampton gained 142 yards in 18 carries and scored a touchdown.
“I wish I could have played another quarter,†Hampton said.
Keith Fitzgerald, who completed 4 of 7 for 51 yards, threw a 12-yard touchdown pass, the first score of the second half.
Doug Dragomer gained 109 yards in 10 carries and scored touchdowns of 11, 3 and 18 yards in the first half for Glendale.
Darren Fitzgerald, who split time at quarterback with Keith Fitzgerald (no relation) and Jay Gilson, scored the final touchdown of the first half with 27 seconds remaining.
