The governing party of Burma renamed itself, a move some diplomats saw as an attempt to change the party’s tarnished image. State-run Radio Rangoon announced that the Burma Socialist Program Party will be known as the National Unity Party but did not elaborate. In recent months, there have been repeated demonstrations, strikes and other acts of opposition to the ruling party and the 26 years of political repression and economic decline associated with it.
