College Roundup : UC Irvine Teams Run to Thirds in San Diego

UC Irvine placed third in both the men’s and women’s divisions at the Aztec Invitational cross-country meet Saturday at San Diego’s Balboa Park.

The men’s team scored 88 points, finishing behind Northern Arizona (38) and New Mexico (65). The Anteater women scored 129, behind UCLA (73) and Northern Arizona (93).

Brigid Sterling, a junior, led the Anteater women with a third-place finish, running 17 minutes 6 seconds for the hilly, 5,000-meter course.

Irvine’s top five were rounded out by Kelli Lewis (13th, 17:49), Caroline Plier (34th, 18:18), Nicole Ritchot (37th, 18:25) and Paige Eicher (42nd, 18:25).

Aaron Mascorro, 13th in 25:35, led the Irvine men over their 8,000-meter course. Rick Willhem (14th, 25:38), Scott LaForce (22nd, 25:45), Ben Ayers (29th, 25:58) and Marc Goulet (30th, 25:59) rounded out Irvine’s top five.

Former Cal State L.A. star Sylvia Mosqueda, the 1988 NCAA 10,000-meter champion, won the women’s race in 16:44. Bo Reed of Northern Arizona won the men’s race in 24:44.

In other women’s nonconference cross-country:

Cal State San Bernardino 25, Southern Utah 38, Chapman 62--Former Panther Carla Figueroa, running unattached, finished first at San Bernardino in 19:12 for three miles.

In other men’s nonconference cross-country: Chapman’s Robert Caparoso finished fifth (29:52) in the five-mile race at San Bernardino. The Panthers did not have a scoring team.

In men’s soccer:

Cal State Fullerton 1, New Mexico 0--Scott Pearson scored at the 56-minute mark to lead the Titans (3-4-1) at Albuquerque. Anthony Jacobs provided the assist, and sophomore goalkeeper Brian Fisher had 5 saves.

Southern California Christian 3, Grand Canyon 2--James Helmuth scored twice and Dan Goodwin once to lead SCC (2-8) at home.

In women’s soccer:

Cal Poly Pomona 2, Chapman 0--Bronco goalie Mara Bloom recorded the shutout, stopping Panther freshman Stassi Dimassis’ school-record scoring streak at six games at Pomona.

In women’s Big West Conference volleyball:

Hawaii 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--Tee Williams had 18 kills to lead Hawaii, the defending NCAA champion, over the Titans, 15-5, 15-6, 15-13, Friday night at Honolulu. Tammy Miller had 12 kills for Fullerton (7-7, 0-1). Hawaii is 7-1 and 1-0.
