CAMPAIGN ’88 : Bentsen Lands Safely
The chartered jet carrying Democratic vice presidential candidate Lloyd Bentsen and his traveling party landed safely Wednesday in Sacramento after a mid-air scare prompted by a warning light indicating that the plane’s landing gear was not locked safely in place.
Emergency trucks were dispatched at the airport as the America West Boeing 737 aborted its descent and circled the airport and a flight engineer on the plane peered through a trap door in the aisle to check on the landing gear. Then, convinced that the warning was a false alarm, the pilot landed the plane without incident about five minutes later.
After a campaign appearance, the Bentsen campaign flew to Fresno in another America West plane.
