U.S. Customs officials have charged that Santa Clara, Calif.-based National Semiconductor Corp. owes $19.5 million for allegedly underpaying duties on microchips it imported from foreign subsidiaries, the company said. National Semiconductor, which has appealed to the Customs Service, says it is confident that it can resolve the matter without having to pay extra money. The company also disclosed that it is embroiled in a dispute over the price that it paid to acquire Fairchild Semiconductor from Schlumberger Ltd. last year.
