Lights Out for Los Amigos Against Magnolia

Magnolia High School defeated Los Amigos, 19-7, in a nonleague contest cut short by a power outage midway through the fourth quarter.

Magnolia (1-1) had a first down at the Lobos’ 13-yard line with 8:06 to play when the Glover Stadium lights went out. After a 15-minute delay, both coaches and the officials met and decided to end the game.

“The players were getting cold and we didn’t want to risk any injuries,” said Tony DiThomas, who recorded his first victory as Magnolia coach.

The Sentinels scored all their points in the first half. Shawn Killfi gave Magnolia a 7-0 lead with a 44-yard first quarter run. The lead was extended to 9-0 on Los Amigos’ next possession when Lobo punter Kevin Neff was tackled in the end zone for a safety.

Magnolia quarterback Jody Clark made the score 16-0 on a third-yard second quarter run followed by Richard Anderson’s 37-yard field goal on the last play of the half to give the Sentinels a 19-0 lead.

Los Amigos (0-2) came back early in the second half, scoring on a nine-yard Freddy Gomez run that was set up by a 25-yard pass from Joe Romero to Julian Johnson. That made the score 19-7.

The Sentinels dominated Los Amigos defensively, causing five turnovers, three of which led to scores. Magnolia also stopped two first half Lobo drives inside the 10 yardline.

“Our team played well on both sides of the ball,” DiThomas said. “I just wish we could have finished the game.”
