Man Injured When Jet Crashed Into Neighborhood Dies

SUMTER, S.C. — A Sumter man severely burned when an Air Force jet plunged into a residential neighborhood last week died of his injuries Friday at the Humana Burn Center in Augusta, Ga.
William Smith, 59, was one of eight people injured when the F-16 crashed into the residential area Tuesday, spewing fuel that ignited a house. The jet had taken off from nearby Shaw Air Force Base.
The pilot ejected and escaped injury.
