Dukakis leaves Southern California today carrying heavier bags than when he arrived.
On Friday, he was given a shiny black jacket emblazoned with the initials DARE, representing the local school anti-drug program, after he spoke at the Los Angeles Police Department. Then, after a rousing rally at Roosevelt High School, he was presented with two school pennants and a small, fuzzy teddy bear. At his last stop, police in Chula Vista gave him a police cap and aviator sunglasses.
And who says the Dukakis campaign doesn’t have soul? The 12-member Mariachi Sol de Mexico band greeted the candidate with white sombreros and blaring trumpets at Roosevelt High. Campaign chairman Paul P. Brountas, a corporate lawyer known more for bow ties than dancing feet, happily tapped his shiny black wing-tips.
