D.A.R.E. TO KEEP KIDS OFF DRUGS

Los Angeles schoolchildren and police this week helped celebrate the fifth birthday of the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, or DARE, a nationwide effort to help children steer clear of drugs. The program, which was developed in Los Angeles through a collaboration of police and school officials, includes a 17-week course in which veteran officers teach fifth- and sixth-grade students skills they can use to stay away from drugs.
