Kennedy High School scored two second-half touchdowns and its defense dominated Santa Ana Valley in a 14-3 victory in front of 1,500 Thursday night at Western High School.
After a scoreless first half, Ed Williams scored on a 16-yard run to give Kennedy (1-0-1) a 7-0 lead midway through the third quarter.
But the Falcons (0-1-1) came back, recovering a Kennedy fumble at the Fighting Irish 25. Four plays later, Manop Phinovwong kicked a 43-yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3.
Kennedy’s defense limited the Falcons to 63 net yards of total offense, which surprised Coach Mitch Olsen. “I was just hoping to contain them,” Olsen said.
The Fighting Irish made it 14-3 on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Pete Montera to Tom Deep, completing a 10-play 79-yard drive in the fourth quarter.
Deep finished with 5 catches for 88 yards. Montera was 11 of 17 for 125 yards and a touchdown and Williams, a junior, had 117 yards on 23 carries.
Santa Ana Valley senior Anthony Williams had three sacks.
